Under Body Air Deflector Skid Plate Shield important?
The positive battery terminal on my 2013 Explorer Sport (only 22K miles)
developed a lot of corrosion and ate through the ring terminal that attaches
to the post. Dealer said it could not be repaired and the entire harness
($250+), plus almost four hundred in labor and a new battery for a total
My question is, "Could this have been repaired simply by replacing the ring
that connects to the battery, rather than the entire cable?"
Also, does anyone know whether the replacement of this harness would
involve removing the Under Body Air Deflector Skid Plate Shield, which
turned up missing after I got the vehicle home. I had asked them to do an oil
change as long as the vehicle was there. They removed my old oil change
sticker, but said they did not get around to the oil change. I know this skid
plate must be removed to do an oil change, but they disavow having started
the oil change procedure.
I ran into this with a '94 Ford Escort that I owned. The dealer told you the truth. The positive (+) battery cable is part of the engine compartment wiring harness. However, it is possible to cut off the original battery "ring" connector and replace it with perfectly fine results. To prevent any future corrosion put Vaseline on the battery terminals and the "ring" connectors. They'll never corrode again! As far as the skid plate, yes you need it. It prevents dirt and puddle splash from getting into/on the engine. Keeping the engine as dry as possible in bad weather is important. It prevents the serpentine belt from getting wet and slipping. This can cause loss of power steering, proper water pump, and alternator operation. You can prove that the oil change was done by looking for a new oil filter and fresh (clean) oil on the oil dipstick. HTH. -Jim
A new end could be put on the battery cable. There are the cheap clamp on types but there are quality solder on ones available.
Dealers will always use factory parts to repair your car no matter the cost to you!
