Is your Check Engine Light on?

How many miles since your last trans. Service ?

No my check engine lite is not on and I have only owned the car for a month it has 36000 miles on it and i don't know if the trans has ever been serviced

By chance do you have a factory warranty?

Not knowing when or if its ever been serviced I would start with that.. If you have ever changed the oil and filter on a automatic trans. You will know , this can be a messy job.. Not hard, just messy.. Auto oil changers will do it fairly reasonable price. Dirty filter & plugged ports will cause tranny to act up & even cause pump failure.. Good luck..

pull the dipstick seeif it smells BURNT , which may not be good

That's bad. If its still moving get a transmission flush along with a new filler. That may get you by for now.
