why do my rear brake lights stay on until i use my turn signal switch

The turn signal switch cancels the brake light for the side that it is turned on too, but the other side should still be lit as a brake light, if this is not the case then there is a problem with both the brake light switch and the turn signal switch. Replace the brake light first as it is the easiest and cheapest to change.
