I know this is an old post, but for anyone else , when the OD indicator on the shift lever starts flashing, you need to have the OBII codes read and fix whatever the code indicates for the transmission fault. Mine did the same thing, 2002 E150 with with 5.4 and 4R70W transmission. My wife did not inform me in time and the transmission grenaded. In my instance the rear seal on the transmission failed at 180,000 miles and was losing fluid, but only when it was driven. No spots in the driveway to indicate leakage.Hope this helps someone.
