For what it's worth, this is a 1998 and don't know if it's same. But it is a CV - 302 but appears to be near tank. click for full screen

Too new of car, I am not for sure but i believe it is under the hood in the corner of fender, it is a round cylinder with 2 or 3 lines going to it, you could follow the lines from the gas tank & should lead you right to it.

OK, the parts houses do list them for '85 CV ---- http://www.crownvic.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2224334

Rowefast is spot-on. When you put gas in, the air and fumes must be displaced. So instead of just out in the air, there is a vent tube from tank to canister. Follow it. The fumes are absorbed by charcoal then air passes on through. When car is started, canister is purged back through intake..
