i have a 2001 ford contour that will turn over but not start. what do i need to check first?

You can eliminate either fuel system or ignition system with a simple test. Have a person help you. While cranking the engine over spray small burst of starting fluid directly into intake throat. If engine runs momentarily suspect fuel system if not ignition system.
