2002 highlander. V6 limited Xmission lock up.

what is cause & Repair if Xmission locks up in Park??       Unable to shift into drive gears.  
This has been happening intermintly . Don't wish to have it hang up somewhere out in
the middle of nowhere.  HELP

Possible issues can be: 1)Brake light switch, if not working properly, this will prevent you from being able to take vehicle out of park. 2)Neutral safety switch, which is an electrical component that relays information to the transmission designating which gear to be in. A malfunction here can also cause you to be stuck in park.3) Worn/faulty shift cable, which is attached to the transmission and switched which gear you have selected. A bad cable can get bound up and not allow you to move vehicle out of park. Those are just some things that you can look into.
