My 1992Roadmaster has a bad shudder (feels like a transmission) when going up any hill but smoothes out after downshifting.

I think your describing a torque converter symptom, there is a product out called Torque converter shutter stop, in my area CarQuest store have it but I'm sure other places have it too. Eventually you will have to dive into the tranny.
