The car runs fine. Outside of the check engine light, you wouln't think anything was wrong. Has great power without any hesitation at all.
Do I just start replaceing stuff ? in what order makes the most sence? Like I said, the car runs fine now. Without knowing what the exact cause is, not sure if driving the car would hurt it further.
Unless I knew just what was wrong, I go and have a diagnostics run. I go to Auto Zone but Advance and others will also check it for you because they are expecting to get the parts order. One time I had a problem on a Chrysler that the parts house couldn't diagnose so I had to go to the dealer. They ran the diags but were very vague on the repair necessary unless I let them fix it. Had that been today, we have a full service diagnostic shop that will tell you what is wrong or repair ir if you want. Just guessing at what to replace next can get expensive. With all the computerized systems on a car today, I think you would just be spinning your wheels. Bite the bullet and go to someone to diag it. Good luck
depending on the year i would see if you know when the last time a tune up was done. if its newer check the gas cap. a bad seal on a gas cap would throw a check engine light on a newer MX-5. other than that i would try a tune up if the codes dont say anything. itll run about 150 for everything you'll need for a tune up. plugs, wires, (cap and rotor if applicable) o2 sensor etc.. also check for a vacuum leak.
...always check the gas cap first,it might just need to be cleaned off, or even replaced...or put on correctly, but that should be your first item to check anytime the engine light comes on.
