can a 2003 1.9td engine be swapped into an 1988 or mk3 jetta or golf

i want to put a 1.9l turbodiesel engine in either a 88 jetta or an mk3 golf. im wondering if it possible to do without
excessively modifying anything, and what all extra i would need to complete the task such as a new compatible
ecu and anything like that.
