VW GTI 2004 (5 speed), looking to buy a shift knob (more sporty one) would a universal one work due to the push down reverse function?

Some people have mentioned to me i would not be able to purchase a regular universal 5
speed shift knob because of the push down reverse function i would need to purchase a
special knob. is this true?
