Question type: General

What can cause a car to die 2 hours into a drive
now it doesn't turn over click or nothing just the
serpentine belt spins when I turn the key car was
parked for about 2 weeks started up but then I
quickly turned it off to check my fluid then when I
tried turning it on it needed a jump. got on the road
and 2 hours later it died on the highway and now
just the belt spins could it be the battery or
something else?

What year are we talking about here? Does this have a serpentine belt or older individual v-belts? Both setups have belt(s) wrapping around crank pulley. If they can "spin" with engine not running then they are seriously loose. Check pulley tensioner (for serpentine belt) or adjustment on alternator (for v-belt). Lack of tension on belt to alternator would prevent it from generating any electrical output to battery, and eventually battery will die. So check belt tension, check battery for proper charge (and have it load tested) and check alternator. Any local shop or even parts stores can do these.

Sounds like you got a lot of things going on here, even if you replace the ECU it needs to be re-programmed and that can be expensive at a dealership. You can try one of those place online that sells ready-made pre-programmed ECUs based on your VIN, you'll have to contact one of them for how to proceed. That still won't address wiring harness issues you may have or the belt. If you haven't alreay pull the battery out, charge it, and haul it up to a parts store and have it load tested. It's hard enough hunting down electrical gremlins without having to wonder if the battery is any good or not.

You only have the one serpentine belt, if there is any slack in it, the tensioner is bad. In addition to the tensioner pulley you have an idler pulley. Slack off the tensioner (requires a socket) and loosen the belt, then spin the tensioner and idler pulleys be hand, if they feel rough, replace them. In fact all the pulleys should be checked. Then replace the belt. When you replace the battery, clean all corrosion off the terminal ends of the battery cables, baking soda and a wire brush works for that (just wear safety glasses), when you reinstall them on the new battery, be sure to use dielectric grease and those felt pads, the parts store should have those.

I replaced that belt about a year ago just because I like to keep maintence on cars as much as possible or to my ability so I will deff will check that
