interested in hearing about costly maint issues

Asked by Dec 30, 2012 at 12:00 AM about the BMW 5 Series

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I am looking at purchasing the referenced car that is certified with 51.5K miles.  Are there any maint issues I should be concerned with?  I read one artical that stated that there were issues with the turbo engine.
Thank you,

Find several BMW forums and read about the good and bad from the owners.

When you test drive it pay attention to the temperature gauge. My nephew had a 1998 328i which developed an overheating problem due to a bad cylinder head. We found out this is a fairly common issue with BMWs from that time period with higher mileage. His BMW had about 150,000 miles on it when it began overheating. He traded it in. Also be on the look-out for electrical issues. He had a few of them too. Such as repeated check engine light issues, & whenever it rained the fuse for the keyless entry/security system would blow. They are very nice cars though. Expensive to fix but very nice. HTH. -Jim
