Steering on 1984 Chevette

Asked by Dec 22, 2014 at 05:55 PM about the Chevrolet Chevette

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1984 Chevette with power rack and pinion steering is leaking all fluid out of it.  Can it be
safely driven without the steering fluid or will it just be harder to steer like a manual?

Should be tough to steer and hopefully the pump won't start making a squeeling or grinding noise due to lack of fluid.

When you replace the faulty rack or hose(s) flush out the old fluid and add fresh power steering fluid. Don't put transmission fluid in it. Many people do and it fouls things up in a hurry! HTH. -Jim
