Question type: General

my 71 mach one is a matching numer car however, the vin on engine  is 4 digits later than on the car.inother words.identical vins except very last digit is a 1 in vin and a 5 on eng and trans, how did this happenthan on

1 Answer

The car body was built just before the engine and transmission. The serial number for the engine and transmission is not always exactly the same as the unit number of the body (last 6 digits of the VIN). On very old cars the engine serial number was the VIN. In fact, Cadillac used that system through the 1970 model year run. HTH. -Jim
