82 El Camino mpg is horrible, how to improve it?
the first thing I did is remove gas tank and clean it out .It was pristine.Blew
out all lines, replaced fuel pump, replaced all air and the fuel filter, flushed
system,changed plugs, wires,rotor,cap,oil,replaced radiator.And other stuff.
Can I change out the choke with either a manual or vac.?Or do I have to
change the carb out?I kind of hate to ask this but is there a way that I can
tie the choke down or rig it for a one way trip to LA?Im running out of
money and need the cheepest way out.
We have gone over this already but check the timing, the compression and if it were me I would buy a new carburetor.
You may be able to buy a manual choke conversion kit for your carb.
That's right you can put a manual choke on to replace the automatic choke, but you will have to learn how it acts when you do, too much choke and you flood the engine too little and it will stall until it reaches operational temp. The mistake a lot of people make is when setting the timing they forget to disconnect the spout connector and then set the base timing + OR - 2 degrees then reconnecting the spout connector. also adding a full flow air cleaner can help mileage wise but only in warmer climates where carb icing is not a problem. Maybe later on, depending on where you live you could change the intake to a 4BBL and another carb like an Edelebrock, it will give better mileage in cruse conditions but if you have emissions testing it won't pass. Have seen some mileage improvements with dual exhaust.
