Transmission problem 1996 Suburban
While in drive, vehicle will shift once then at or around 20 - 25 miles per hour the engine will race but transmission will not shift. I replaced transmission filter which was dirty but transmission fluid was still redish and not burned at all. Could this be a vehicle speed sensor problem? I did not force the issue but crept back to driveway and parked.
Second gear problem, no 1-2 shift, or, shifts to second but loses grip. like a second gear band, or drive clutch slipping. you cannot externally adjust them except during the rebuild. you can scan it for codes, check adjustments of switch or linkage (cable) but you may have to consult the transmission shop.
The band was changed to "overrun band" years ago. more likely if adjustments are right, system pressures read good, it will need an overhaul
What does it do when manually select 1st, then 2nd ? they may ask you.
Did you find out what was wrong with it
Dismantled 4L60E transmission and found the following: Induction drum concaved slightly and band glazed. All frictions devoid of fiction material. Sun shield collar broke completely off. Thin bearing beneath small planetary exploded and its small cylindrical rollers scattered throughout. No metal filings or any other damage found. Estimated cost for parts approx. $400. Going high energy when and where possible and replacing sun shield with the tougher Monster. All bushings appear ok but I may replace all while opportunity allows which will increase costs slightly. YouTube videos have helped tremendously. Awaiting necessary funds.
