Mondeo 95' 1.8, serious Pollution problem

Asked by Feb 19, 2010 at 02:28 AM about the 1995 Ford Mondeo

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello all,
I have a 1995 Ford Mondeo MK1.

The car has serious pollution problem. It's CO level is more than 10 times than allowed by law. (around 3.7%)
It also consumes too much gas, and its rpm (idle) is always higher than ir should - around 1300 rpm.

It suppose to be a common problem with this car - so maybe one of you knows the reason?

We looked at the oxygen sensor and it OK, also the catalytic converter and it's sensor is OK too.

Please assist.

Thank you very much!
Asaf.

Your emissions are usually governed by the Lambda Sensor & The Catalytic converter, the lambda tells the ecu the Air/Fuel ratio which allows the ecu to adjust to the required setting... You mentioned the increased RPM @ Idle, this could be due to the Idle speed control valve or you could have an air leak which isn't registering until it's burnt & the AFR would deem it too lean an mixture, hence the increased fuel & emissions... I'd check all of the hosing on the inlet side of the engine for cracks & wear... you'll usually hear a sucking/whistling sound Hope that helps Dan

A simple solution is when was the car last serviced? A new air filter may help, beyond this there is a possibility that the injectors are leaking, this is a known problem and causes the fuel to flood the cylinders.
