idle speed on 2000 chevy cavalier

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

How do I set the idle speed on my 2000 chevy cav , when you start it, even if its warmed up, it idles between 2500 and 3000 rpm, then slowly drops to 1500 rpm, but doesn't go any lower than that, I have to press on the brakes hard to stop because its idling so high

You can't. It's computer controlled. Sounds like the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve is bad or you have a vacuum leak. Is your check engine light or service engine soon light on? If so have your computer scanned. Advance and Autozone auto parts stores will do it for free. Post the trouble codes here and we can help further. HTH. -Jim

if its determined that its the IAC, how do I replace it

It bolts onto the throttle body and has one electrical connector. HTH. -Jim

I've also had the fuel pressure regulator on the end of the fuel rail go bad pumping raw gas through a vac port in the intake that coupled with a sticky IAC valve will do it. To check the regulator pull the vac hose off the nipple and see if you have fuel coming out. If it's leaking you do NOT need to remove the fuel rail to change it as the book says but you WILL curse like a sailor doing it this way. And i went through 3 of them from Orilleys till i got a good one so always check the new installed one if it's leaking fuel from the inside.
