A little vague here, what are you trying to do? Get more performance out of the engine or the transmission? If you increase horsepower of the engine enough then the tranny is the next thing to go bad, if you put in a high performance tranny but don't have the ponies to drive it your loosing?

Your tranny can easily handle a little more power from the engine. A bit of a cam and some headers and a good tuneup if it needs it will make it quite a bit peppier and more fun to drive. Service the transmission at the same time and add a mild shift kit if one is available and you should be good. As long as you don't abuse it the transmission should be fine as long as its not already worn out.
