Starter won't engage
Stock 1970 455 cutlass. Turn the key ..nothing happens. Have checked battery connections, ground ,natural switch. Have auxiliary wire to solenoid....and touch to battery + and starts every time. Only does this intermittently, maybe 1 of 10 times, never when cold, mostly w warm engine.
I would have the starter load tested at a alternator, starter shop. When the starter gets hot and does not want to turn over is an indication of worn bushings in the starter. The contact inside the solenoid could be all carbon-ed up also.
The ignition switch down on the steering column could also be going bad.
When it refuses to crank try tapping the starter with a hammer (no joke). If it then cranks it's the starter as Rowefast said. I'd suggest having the one that's in there already rebuilt as opposed to getting a rebuilt one from a parts store. God only knows what you'll wind up with!! HTH. -Jim
