Pulling the spark plugs out will make it easier to turn the engine over. Basically you have to use a socket wrench and turn over the crank and cam until they are in the correct position.

There is a mark on the timing gear and the crankshaft gear that line up together.

There's a dimple on each of the timing gears. The crankshaft dimple should be at 12 O'clock and the camshaft gear dimple should be at either 12 O'clock or 6 O'clock depending on how the engine is set up. A repair manual such as Chilton's will show you. Since your post says 1981 then 1993 I'm not sure what year your Cutlass is. Usually on an Olds the camshaft gear dimple should be at 6 O'clock. The crankshaft dimple is always at 12 O'clock. HTH. -Jim
