bought 71 cutlass that has been sitting for 6 plus yrs drove home and trans will not shift at all after sitting over nite

Should check for vacuum leaks, the vacuum that goes down to the trany, also check the fluid level, & see if it needs to be changed also.

Exactly, most likely the vacuum line going from the intake manifold to the vacuum modulator on the transmission has come off. HTH. -Jim
