Question concerning timing gears for 1970 Riviera, 455

Asked by RHM45 Sep 10, 2011 at 07:48 PM about the 1970 Buick Riviera

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1970 Riviera and have been told that the timing gears for the 455 are fiber gears, which are prone to wear out and break.  Just wanted to check with someone here, who might know.  The car currently has 59,000 miles.  Are the timing gears fiber or steel?  Please advise... Thanks!

You can purchase steel gears from Jeg'g, Summit racing,Speedway Motors, or any aftermarket auto parts store. The fiber gear was to keep things quiet, any way it is not hard to pick up a set of quality timing set . Even GM Performance has them, try Pace Performance.
