I don't know. I thought I had the rarest Pontiac in a 1978 Sunbird Safari Wagon. But there were 8000 or so of these made. It still runs great. Best of luck with your car. My brother had a 1964 1/2 GTO but that was long ago and far away.
1972 GTO's were an option available on a LeMans. There were 5807 produced and none were a convertible. Lots of confusion with 72's and 73's. In 71 & 72, you could order a GTO front facia with a Lemans Sport but it did not have the other GTO stuff like sway bars and higher output engine options and it was badged as a Lemans Sport. Many of these were rebadged by owners as GTO's when they were not. If your numbers show it, you probably have a true 72 GTO but not as rare as you think but still a unique vehicle to keep around..
"Goat" is simply a nickname for the GTO. Like Chevy is to Chevrolet. Contact Allied Vaughn. For $50.00 you can get a copy of you car's factory to dealer invoice if your vehicle identification number is available. That'll tell you exactly what you have. Google "gm media archives" to get to Allied Vaughn's website. HTH. -Jim
