I'm trying to located the engine number that I think should match the last 6 digits of the vin # and I'm assuming the engine code is close to that engine # where ever it is.

The GTO restoration Guide will have the information you are looking for. Each model year may have a different location for numbering. What year is your GTO? I have a 66 and I believe the block numbers are on the right side rear just below the head and by the distributer.
