Do you have power steering? If so the fluid could be low or pump could be bad. Also, there are bearings inside the steering column that, after 47 years, may need to be lubricated. I'd recommend getting a factory shop manual. The shop manual will show exploded views of the steering column and explain how to disassemble and service the steering column as well. Check out Faxon Auto Literature in Riverside California. They have a website. Very good quality literature. I've bought from there several times. HTH. -Jim
