why do i smell freeon but the engine isnt getting hot the coolant light comes on
I'm pretty sure what you smell is the coolant leaking and evaporating on or near the engine. Hence the low coolant light. Fill the coolant reservior for now and see how much it takes. Then look after you drive for a leak.
It could be that the coolant level is so low that the temperature sensor is high and dry. Fill it up like Tom said and get it fixed ASAP. You can destroy a engine in minutes by running with no coolant.
