front disk brakes dragging?

Asked by bparker91 Sep 28, 2014 at 10:06 PM about the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2005 Silverado front disc brakes, back drum brakes. I replaced the master cylinder
several months back after the front brakes all but locked up one day, we could bleed
the lines and drive it 5 min and would lock up again. Replacing master cylinder fixed
the problem then, about 6 months later driving down interstate truck starts shaking
brakes dragging again but released on their own in a few min. It only does it once in a
while maybe twice a week and it you stomp on the brakes they will let go and you can
continue driving as usual??? Also when they start dragging they gradually get worse
and worse, like the pads keep tightening down until you stomp the pedal a few times
and they release? What could be the problem?

The only other thing I would suspect would be the calipers.. Does one hang or do both sides hang?

As far as I can tell both hang, the first time I noticed it on the interstate when I pulled off both sides were smoking lightly and since then when the problem occurs when I stop you can feel both rims are abnormally hot and smell hot brakes on both sides of the truck/

But if it's both sides, it could be more of a brake booster issue as well.

Could also be master cyl -collapsed lines-booster or ABS my thoughts would be since both fts locking up would be in the master cyl. If possible crack a bleeder valve open and see if it releases that side then look at master cyl may be sticking causing pressure not to release. GM has had this problem for years and will not admit to error or recall for the fix. It is the same with the fuel pump and gauge and the wiring harness for the blower motor (which they finally had a campaign for the repair) this could have caused fire under dash or melting of the wiring harness etc. Guess after someone gets injured or worst they may want to fix the issues. We also own a 06 Malibu and now have several recalls on this car. Be careful if your towing with those brake issues could cost you dearly

I have changed calipers both front brake hoses, replaced master cylinder with a new one and flushed brake fluid. still has the problem of brakes dragging. It seems to happen on hot days.

2006 Sierra 4WD: I've had an intermittent condition of front disc brakes slowing seizing up. Hot brake smell and hot wheels, shuddering in front end, poor acceleration. Replaced hoses, master cylinder, calipers, pads, whole 9 yards. Problem came back. Cracking nut at master cylinder releases fluid and pressure until the next time. Occurs more often on hot days. These posts and others lead me to believe it may be booster push rod adjustment. Gonna try that tomorow.
