car isn't recognizing the key and puts the car into theft system. ignition will turn over but will not start.

Possible key chip failure. Check with the dealer, using the VIN they might be able to reprogram a set of keys and cut you some new ones but they usually require proof of ownership. There are also a few locksmiths that can do the same thing but they are few and far between. Either way it is not going to be cheap.

Check with your local Chevrolet Dealer and see if your Malibu is involved in the widespread GM ignition switch recall. If so, you may be able to get it fixed for free. HTH. -Jim
