Did LeMans 1972 ever come with 2 speed Powerglide transmission?
Don't know what work previous owner did. Has 350CI, but originally 2 barrel carb. Having problems with driveshaft contacting tranny tunnel on hard braking. Mounts a little worn, but just wondering about the tranny being original. Shifter on column reads only "L" and "D"; no "2" in between (typical for a two speed
Not likely. Probably a swap
The transmission and or the steering column could have been replaced. The longest drive shaft would fit three transmissions. Power glide, turbo 350 and the 200 4R. The Turbo 400 and the 700 4R you would need a shorter drive shaft. The trans cross member would have to be repositioned to accommodate a different trannies. Look for marks that might help determine the original position of the cross member. Were new cross member holes drilled into the frame? My ‘72 LeMans Coupe originally came with multiple frame mounting holes to accommodate multiple tranny options. Your problem sounds like an alignment issue, weak or loose transmission mount or a universal joint problem. GL
actually we got to the root of the problem. Worn body bushings. The Powerglide was original in the car. ..My husband wants to sell it but I would like to swap the 350 engine with a '79 425 Cadillac engine i built. Have some 400 trannies in two other Caddys that would complete the swap, and the drivshaft as you said would need to be shorter. No problem as I know a place that makes shafts to order. I also have a Ford 9" I had made for a Chevy Caprice; so that would need some reworking to fit, but was built to withstand the torque of that Caddy engine..Naturally, those body bushings need replacing..
