1968 Firebird 400 HO with the rally side stripe option with the letters GT was this a dealer modification?
I purchased a 1968 Firebird back in 1981 when I was stationed at Ft. Lewis Wa.
Back in the eighties I thought the side stripe was just some modification the previous owner installed on the car. Then I sent away for the paperwork from the Pontiac Historical Society and the rally side stripe appeared as an option. The car is a 1968 Firebird 400 HO 4 spd car, rally gages, walnut shifter, hood tach, fold down rear seat, the car even had PMD air shocks and the rally side stripes but the letters GT and not HO appear on the car. Ever heard of a "GT" stripe 400 HO car?
The original dealer was Finney Pontiac of Oceanside Ca. Was this one of those
dealers that had it's own special dealer prep and options. Also the listed price on the PHS record is nearly 5 grand way over the base cost.
A lot of people ask about the "GT" stripe what should I say?
http://firstgenfirebird.org/FAQ/body/emblems_strips.html....nothing listed about GT stripes. For potential buyers, I'd tell them what you told us, you bought it that way. Let them remove them if they want.
