86 nissan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Have a 86 nissan with z24 I got in a trade and was
told it has a new head and valves but needs timed.
I have the front cover off and went through the
timing steps. Made sure by hand no valves were
gonna hit. Now it will try to turn over but builds
compression and won't turn all the way over unless
spark plugs are taken out? Any suggestions?

Yes, you want to take out the spark plugs. Then you want to turn the engine over by hand 2 revolutions to make sure your timing marks are where they are suppose to be.

Unless I'm miss understanding your question.

Yes I just did that after timing it again and they are not lining back up. It has New head and valves but not a new timing set

What ever you do, make sure the timing marks are set to where there suppose to be! This is an interference engine. Valves will hit if the timing marks are off.

I have set it several times with the marks right and TDC number one. But turn it 2 revolutions and it's off every time but turns over fine. Do you think I need to get a new timing set?

I wanted to know what size this is so I can look at it so I have a better idea on whats going on. Those marks have to come back to where they belong.

It's the 4 cylinder 8 plug engine single overhead cam

I would put a new timing chain kit into it. Not that expensive. Check it out on this sight. https://www.carid.com/1986-nissan-pick-up-engine-parts/beck-arnley-timing-gear-set-35804597.html

Okay I'll do that and see what happens. Thanks

Your welcome. You'll be sorry if you don't get those timing marks right.
