What would cause black smoke to come out of tail pipe? Could low oil in motor mean it has oil leaking

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

black smoke, and low oil light is on what would cause this? Is it worth $500?

1 Answer

Black smoke is caused by too much fuel (rich mixture). Low oil can be caused by a leak or by a worn out engine (bad oil rings allowing oil to pass into the cylinders). Check the oil level using the dipstick and also look under the car for signs of a leak. Hard to say if it is worth $500. It may need major repairs.
