First of all have the car inspected. I say that not as a average buyer, i say that as a technician who works on these things all the time. Ask when the transmission was last overhauled these are notorious for transmission work and oil leaks, and if you have never driven one drive it first. Everything rattles like no other in those and it is normal, driving old volkswagons is certainly not for everyone.

Since I have owned my '87 since new, I will say in general they are a solid car. The only place they leak oil is from the valve cover gasket. That's a cheap fix. Do get the car checked over, especially if it has an automatic transmission.
