I just purchaed what I thought was a 1984 Jetta, but it has double headlights, not the single ones I see online. Must be a 1983?

Have the VIn number decoded by a VW dealership. It's possible if it was an early 1984 that they used leftover '83 parts, this is common among vehicle manufacturers. The date code in the VIN will tell you production date/model year.
