Where's the master cylinder?

My brother just bought a 1985 VW Vanagon and the breaks are loose. We can't find the master cylinder to fill the break fluid and i was wondering if anyone could help me out. thanks much

under hood,drivers side mounted to firewall.may be round with a screw off cap.
