What are some issues to look out for on the 1973 VW Beetle?

Rust, unless the vehicle has spent its entire life in the desert. Beetles are notorious for developing rust in the worst areas, especially the floors, engine mounting points and rocker panels. Beyond that, parts are readily available, and there are a lot of good clubs around with great members willing to help you with repairs.
