1971 beetle type 1, just had the 1600cc engine rebuilt, picked it up yesterday was driving today and a spark plug shot out of its mount stripping the threads on the engine. why did this happen?

driving the car and heard a loud 'pow' then engine started to run very poorly I pulled into
parking lot and found that a spark plug had been blown out of its mount stripping the
threads on the engine. plug threads appeared to be fine. What caused this and how
long to fix it?

Sounds like the lovely mating call of detonation. But it could be just the plug wasnt tight to begin with. Either way, if you had the engine rebuilt, just take it back. This one is on them.
