I just bought a 1970 VW beetle 1300. It needs a new starter and floor pan in the rear passenger side. I want to install these myself and was wondering if you had any advice for doing so. Cheap!!
hi there, to replace the starter you'll need a jack (and stand/s) capable of lifting the car high enough to crawl underneath the car, it's located on the right hand side (UK drivers side) or if you have ramps then you can revers the car up them (once you've bump started it;-)). The battery needs to be disconnected under the rear seat, then the 17mm nut from in the engine bay(awkward to get to in front of the fan housing), the 13mm nut for the main cable can be taken off the starter solenoid, the trigger wire unclipped, and the 17mm from the bottom of the starter casing and it should come out, I find it easier to remove the heater ducting first but can't remember if that's necessary? as for the rear floor, the only proper way to replace that is with a welder, after cutting the old one out (& unbolting if you're going far enough under the heater channel/sill, best left to a pro if you can't weld or if you want more advice on this to post a pic of how much needs repairing Hope this helps a bit :-)
