Water pump problems

Asked by Sep 28, 2015 at 11:01 PM about the 1986 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Went to change the water pump on a 86 Grand Wagoneer.  It has a serious
hard clog in one of the ports.  Lots of sludge in hoses.  Have had it flushed
many times.  What is it?

Sounds like someone put stop leak in the cooling system, if it is too bad you will have to remove all of the freeze plugs and get in there and scrape it all out then use a combination of solvent and air pressure to clean the rest of it out, that is of course worst case senerio. In the mean time you can try a cooling system flushing solvent, most parts stores carry it, but remember it will open up any coolant leaks it might have including head gasket or heater core leaks.
