1989 cheroke grand lorado will not shift out of 2nd

bought it out of a feild last year and have been trying to get it running dependably. Got it started and finally moving but now it will not shift out of 2nd. I have heard that there is a filter on the transmission that gets clogged. could someone please tell me where it is?

If you got out of a field you should have already changed the fluids and the filter would have been with the transmission filter kit, if you didn't change the fluids do them now. The transmission filter is located in the transmission, when you drop the trans oil you will see it.

what year is this vehc? he 89 model uses aw4 trans. 86 uses chrysler 904.
