Why does my 97 dodge ram 1500 stall when in reverse

There is a device called a torque converter control solenoid. Sometimes if you are having weird issues when you put it in gear, this can be bad. See if you can locate it and unplug the wires to it and then put the car in reverse to see what happens.

It is in the transmission. Don't know exactly where on your model. A Haines manual or Chiltons should have it. I have also had luck asking Napa. You will probably have to get under the truck. Just so u know, if it does turn out to be the problem you will likely need a tranny guy to fix it.
