power to engine cuts off and on like on a timer
Drove my 1985 dodge w100, 318 about ten miles one way then on the way back after 3 hrs. we got about 5 miles and the motor would lose power for a couple seconds then start again and cut off again, so on for the next 5 miles till we got home. I have no idea what module or relay would act like a timer cutting the juice off and on like that. Anyone have any idea?
I did want to add, I have replaced the following: alternator, timing chain, distributor, coil, ICU, start run relay, battery, ignition switch, idle speed control and ballast resister. The only item not replaced is the EGR timer relay. Not sure what that does.
Try checking for any computer fault codes. You can do this with the ignition key, turn it on-off 5 times (on-off-on-off-on) then leave it in the on position. You should then see the "check engine" (or "limited") dash light illuminate and begin a series of flashes. This link give you instructions on reading the flashes and what the codes mean: http://www.allpar.com/fix/codes/index.html . The problem you report having could be a module or sensor related and if it is, it should be setting a code.
I have had some bad experiences with one auto store and some of the relays were from there. Returned two ICU's. First time most of these have been replace since I bought it new.
