What was the fuel mileage on a 426 hemi challenger?
Hi schoolkid! I owned a 1970 Challenger but it wasn't the hemi. The closest I could find for fuel milage on that model years was the 9 mpg tag for the 440 V8 on this site: http://www.is-it-a-lemon.com/used-car-history/dodge-challenger-rt-se.htm ... And I happen to know the fuel capacity of that model year was 18 gallons but here is verification of my sometimes-sketchy memory http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1970-70-Dodge-Challenger-Gas-Fuel-Tank-CR8B_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33556QQihZ003QQitemZ130077399056QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW Good luck!
Hi Schoolkid, We really didn't pay that much attention to gas mileage. Gas was 30 to 40 cents a gallon. You could fill the tank for less than $5.00. Moparfan4404
If memory serves, fuel mileage was only about 5 to 7 miles per gallon for the 426 Hemi V8, pretty much across the board for all the models it was used in. I would consider this a low estimate, however. Naturally, those with the optional lower 4.56:1 gears got the worst mileage, but offered the best acceleration. Even with the lower-appearing gas prices of the 1960s and very early 1970s, people weren't made of money then. Cars with these engines were sold in such low numbers simply because people weren't jumping on them because of their dismal fuel economy and relatively high maintenance. But they were the stuff of dreams for many of us, and remain so.
