1996 Mercedes c280 gas pedal problem
Asked by HN May 09, 2013 at 11:35 AM about the 1996 Mercedes-Benz C-Class
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Hi I have a 96 C280 when I start the car and move right away a few meters ahead the gas
pedal becomes soft under my foot (no upward resistance) and the ASR lights up on the
dashboard( the fault reads "idle speed connector") . I have to push the pedal all the way
down for the car to move. Turn the car off then on back again the car would work
normally the problem might or might not happen again during the same ride. Last winter I
replaced the gas mechanism( inside the motor contains a valve head with an electric
board on the side) the car worked fine until this winter came now the problem is back!

Your car has a drive by wire throttle. Meaning the pedal is not directly connected to the throttle body, instead it's connected to a little black box under the hood that tells the computer what you want to do, then the computer tells the throttle body to open and close, depending on the pressure you apply to the pedal. The circuitry or the motor in the throttle body has finally failed, you'll need to replace the entire throttle. body. I got a second hand one from www.Automodix.com. Go to the website type in your make and model and the part you are looking for and they will link you to a number of breaker yards that specialize in your make. Pick your part and they'll ship it to you.
