how much time does it take to replace sparkplugs?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

a mechanic charged me for 2 hours of time to replace the spark plugs.  This was just part
of an expensive full tune up. My sister thinks the plugs should have taken about 15 - 30
minutes.

Plugs on a Volvo should take just over 30min who has done it before. Since you got a full tuneup, (not sure what else they did, ) the other hour was for those things. Mechanics like to charge what's called book or shop time. A certain procedure is booked a certain amount of time. The customer usually is charged this amount, even if the person working on the car finishes earlier and or sometimes later. The profit goes to pay for the building, heat, salaries, insurance, etc.

THANK YOU! The 2 hours was just the time to replace spark plugs. Plus $71 parts fee for the spark plugs. They also billed 30 mins. to replace serpentine belt, plus $70 for the belt; also another 1 hour for checking all fluid levels and replacing the oil filter, and changing the oil. They also charged $60 for 6 quarts of Mobil 1 oil (which is the oil I requested). $40 for Cabin Air filter, $33 for Air Filter, $12 for Volvo oil filter kit, $9 for brake cylinder degreaser, $3 for wiper solvent. Total parts and labor $668. I was stunned at the price, I was expecting the $350 they had given me as an estimate. Do you think I have the right to contest any of these charges? I greatly appreciate your help.

Sounds like dealer or a independent Volvo shop, and all prices are what I would expect to see. Mechanics mark up part prices and will add all extraneous sprays and solvents. The oil is probably synthetic and that $60 is dead on. The filters prices are a little excessive. Since you already paid it, no need to contest it. Are you happy with the work? Good mechanic are worth finding. But I'd chalk it up as a learning experience and next time your Volvo needs attention call a couple other shops for estimates.

Thank you again, very kind of you to take the time to answer. I appreciate your advice, and it is helpful.

I jus priced this job and the parts alone jus for the tune up without coils and that was 85.00
