Can't find a fix
I have a 1999 VW Beetle 2.0L 5 speed. On 3
separate occasions all the lights on the dash come
on, the radio stops working, and the car starts to
lock up before it dies. The first time my mechanic
said I had a faulty throttle body, so he put in a new
one. When I drove it home the next day it died
again, and he said it was possibly my battery. I
replaced the battery and it drove fine until a few
months later all the symptoms started happening
again and it died. This time he said it was my
alternator, which I replaced along with a new
battery. Now just tonight it happened to me again.
This is the fourth time, and I'm unsure what to do.
I wouldn't take it back to that mechanic, sounds like he is just guessing and replacing parts and not fully diagnosing the problem. The new beetles in the late nineties to 2000's are prone to electrical issues. Have an VW dealer or local shop that specializes in foreign cars. Have them diagnose and check the car out. It might cost a little more but they will find the problem and get it repaired quickly,. Tell them what parts where already replaced.
