I just had my tranny fluid flushed, so I know a bit about this. The tranny in the Passat is a sealed unit which means that you can't check the fluid level without having to lift the car, breaking the seal between the tranny pan and body and then check. I don't reccomend this. Also how many miles does the car have? If it isn't leaking and it has fairly low miles, under 55k for example your fine. Mine has 82k and the fluid was really low and really dirty. Hope this helps

@Jack, hey Jack the german cars which I have owned were all very good cars (VW,AUDI,Mercedes). Why should someone "run away" from them in your opinion?

Many of today's high performance engines ( all Models) do not have visible dipsticks. Like GuruDBM48 said the German engines are probably the finest and best engineered in the world! Every 100K take in your car to get checked.

I just traded off a 2005 Chevy Equinox that had a sealed transmission and my sister has a Cavalier that's sealed. Last time I checked, Chevy isn't a German vehicle.

I have a 2007 Betts that shifts hard. It jerks and sometime doesn't want to shift. Sometime swueels my tires. During my research I have found it's a valve in the sealed transmisson and happens in a lot if not all of them so my question is how is VW not taking responsibility for a crappy part and recalling it. That seems unethical and bad business.

Germán cars are the biggest pieces of shit in the world, not only I work on cars but I also sell used cars. Lots of cheap plastic parts around the engine, weird metal alloys to make you buy some kind of special engine oils. And the transmissions, well there are about 4 to 5k dollars and o lt last about 80k mikes..go Toyota Camry and save a lot of money and headachea.

There is no dipstick on a 2002 passat. You must take to a dealer where they will rip you off for $350 for fluid change. Just had my paasat done . This is by far the worst and most expensive car i have ever owned. I will never buy a vw again
