Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1991 mazda bravo/b2600 with a 2001 bravo/b2600 engine, the car starts and idles fine, but when I try to give it revs it coughs and splutters and the engine dies out. I have asked a few people and they think it could be the crankshaft sensor. has anyone ever had this problem and if so how did you fix it?

The problem was the oxygen sensor, the previous owner had put the 2001 sensor in but the wiring loom had not been changed to suit so the loom was sensing that it had too much oxygen flowing through and compensating by sending less fuel thus causing the cough and splutter.

disconnect the mass air flow sensor, at the air box .note if any change, if none change it. also check the idle control valve, disconnect it see what happens, test your throttle position sensor. you may find one wire running from idle control to computer. it's at the front of tappet cover disconnect it,engine should idle high. you may need to clean throttle or idle controller or replace air flow sensor. check one at a time.
